Many employees open their IRP5 or their ITA34 notice of assessment, find an amount next to code 3825 and wonder why SARS is taxing money they never received. The short answer is that 3825 is your employer's contribution to a provident fund on your behalf, and it sits in your income on purpose. This guide explains what the code means, how it differs from its neighbours 3817 and 3828, how it links to the deduction codes 4003 and 4473, where you see it on eFiling, and what to do when the figure looks wrong.
If you want the wider picture of every retirement code on an assessment, read our guide to ITA34 codes 4001, 4003, 4005 and 3817. For the deduction limit itself, see SARS code 4006 and the 27.5% retirement cap.
What does code 3825 on my IRP5 mean?
Code 3825 is the value of the taxable benefit your employer gave you by paying provident fund contributions for your benefit. The SARS Guide for Codes Applicable to Employees Tax Certificates 2027 (PAYE-AE-06-G06, revision 14) describes it as "Benefit: Employer Provident Fund contributions (PAYE)" and states that the code is valid from the 2017 year of assessment.
In plain terms, every rand your employer paid into your provident fund during the tax year is reported on your IRP5 as a fringe benefit under 3825. It is not cash in your bank account. It is the employer's share of your fund contributions, which the law treats as remuneration in your hands.
Is code 3825 income or a deduction?
It is income. Code 3825 sits in the fringe benefit block of the IRP5, alongside other benefits such as a company car or a medical aid contribution. The matching deduction is reported separately under code 4003, which is covered below.
What is code 3875?
Code 3875 is the foreign service version of 3825. The SARS codes guide says 3875 is used only for the taxable benefit of employer contributions to a local fund while the employee is on foreign service. If you worked abroad for a South African employer during the year, check which of the two codes your employer used.
Why did 3825 only appear from 2017?
The Comprehensive Guide to the ITR12 explains that two changes took effect from 1 March 2016: provident fund contributions became deductible, and the employer's contribution became a taxable fringe benefit in the hands of the employee that in turn becomes a deemed contribution by the employee. The 2017 year of assessment was the first full tax year under those rules, which is why the code guide dates 3825 from 2017.
How do codes 3817, 3825 and 3828 differ?
The three codes carry the same kind of benefit for three different types of fund. The codes guide lists them together, each valid from the 2017 year of assessment, and each with a foreign service twin in brackets: 3817 (3867), 3825 (3875) and 3828 (3878).
- 3817: What it carries: Employer pension fund contributions; Deduction code: 4001
- 3825: What it carries: Employer provident fund contributions; Deduction code: 4003
- 3828: What it carries: Employer-paid retirement annuity contributions; Deduction code: 4006
Why is 3828 described as an employee's debt?
A retirement annuity is a policy you own personally, so when your employer pays the premium, it is settling a debt that is yours. The codes guide labels 3828 "Employees Debt: Employer paid Retirement Annuity Fund contributions" for that reason. Pension and provident funds are employer schemes, so 3817 and 3825 are labelled as employer contributions paid for your benefit.
Can I have 3825 and 3817 on the same IRP5?
Yes, if your employer contributes to both a pension fund and a provident fund for you. Each fund's employer contribution is reported under its own code, and each flows into its own deduction code.
Why is my employer's provident fund contribution taxed as a fringe benefit?
Since 1 March 2016 the employer's contribution to a retirement fund is a taxable fringe benefit in the employee's hands, and that same amount becomes a deemed contribution by the employee. The ITR12 guide states both halves of the rule in section 10.3.1. The point of the design is that all contributions, yours and your employer's, are counted in one place and tested against one deduction limit under section 11F of the Income Tax Act.
Does 3825 mean I pay more tax?
Not on its own. The 3825 amount is added to your income, and the same amount is added to your 4003 contribution total. While your total retirement contributions stay inside the section 11F limit, the deduction cancels the fringe benefit. Tax only rises when your combined contributions from all funds exceed the limit, and the excess is carried forward to the next year rather than lost.
Is 3825 subject to PAYE?
The codes guide marks the code "(PAYE)", which means it forms part of the remuneration your employer uses to calculate employees' tax each month. Your employer also takes the deemed contribution into account, so in most months the PAYE effect is neutral within the limit.
How does 3825 link to codes 4003 and 4473?
Code 3825 never stands alone. The SARS PAYE Employer Reconciliation business requirements specification (version 24.0.2) ties it to two deduction codes and sets validation rules employers' payroll systems must pass.
What is code 4003?
Code 4003 is the total provident fund contributions paid and deemed paid by the employee, excluding the value of code 4586. The specification states that "deemed paid" means the value of the taxable benefit under code 3825 or 3875 included in your income. So 4003 is your own salary deductions plus the 3825 amount.
What is code 4473?
Code 4473 is the employer's provident fund contributions paid for the benefit of the employee, excluding the value of code 4586. It is an information code that records what the employer paid. The specification states it is valid from 2006 to 2009 and again from the 2017 year of assessment.
What are the validation rules between them?
The specification requires that if code 4473 is completed, code 3825 and/or 3875 and code 4003 must also be completed. If code 4586 is greater than zero and 4473 is zero, then 3825, 3875 and 4003 must be zero. In practice, a 4473 figure with no matching 3825 on the same certificate is a payroll error.
What is code 4586?
Code 4586 is the employer's provident fund contribution for a member who has retired from the fund, or for the dependants or nominees of a deceased member, where the "no value" provision in paragraph 12D(6) of the Seventh Schedule applies. Those contributions carry no taxable value, so they are kept out of 3825, 4003 and 4473.
How does the 3825 amount count towards the retirement deduction limit?
SARS adds your 4001, 4003 and 4006 totals together and calculates the allowable deduction itself. The ITR12 guide states that SARS calculates the deduction programmatically and carries any excess forward to the following year of assessment.
What is the section 11F limit?
The ITR12 guide sets the allowable deduction at the lesser of a rand cap, 27.5% of the greater of remuneration or taxable income (before the section 11F and section 18A deductions, and excluding retirement, withdrawal and severance lump sums), and taxable income before those deductions excluding taxable capital gains. The rand cap is R350 000 for years of assessment up to 2026 and R430 000 from the 2027 year of assessment. SARS confirms the increase in its Budget 2026 frequently asked questions.
Does a large 3825 amount use up my retirement annuity space?
Yes. The limit is shared. A generous employer provident contribution reported under 3825 counts against the same cap as your own retirement annuity premiums under 4006. If you top up a retirement annuity late in the tax year, add the 3825 amount from your payslips to your planning. Our guide to the tax benefits of retirement annuities shows how the shared limit works with an RA.
Where do I find 3825 on eFiling, the ITR12 and the ITA34?
You see 3825 in three places: on the IRP5/IT3(a) certificate your employer issues, in the certificate section of your ITR12 on eFiling, and in the income lines of your ITA34 assessment.
Where does it appear on the ITR12?
Employer certificates are pre-populated into the IRP5/IT3(a) section of the ITR12 from the reconciliation your employer submits to SARS. Code 3825 appears among the fringe benefit codes and 4003 among the deductions. Under the Fourth Schedule to the Income Tax Act, as the codes guide summarises, your employer must issue these certificates and submit the reconciliation documents within the prescribed period.
Where does it appear on the ITA34?
The ITA34 lists the 3825 amount under income from employment, and the retirement fund deduction SARS allowed appears further down. If the allowed deduction is lower than your 4001, 4003 and 4006 total, the difference is the excess SARS carried forward.
What if I am a partner, not an employee?
The ITR12 guide has a separate question for partners who are deemed employees of a partnership: from the 2017 year of assessment you indicate the fund type and complete the fringe benefit field using 3817, 3825 or 3828. The fringe benefit amount must be less than or equal to the amount contributed by the partnership.
What are the practical steps to check code 3825 on eFiling?
Check the code before you file, not after the assessment arrives. These steps use the standard eFiling ITR12 screens.
- Collect your documents. Your IRP5/IT3(a), your February payslip and your provident fund's annual benefit statement.
- Open the ITR12. On eFiling, request the personal income tax return (ITR12) for the year and open the IRP5/IT3(a) section.
- Find 3825 and 4003. Confirm that 3825 equals the employer contributions on your payslips for the year, and that 4003 equals your own provident deductions plus the 3825 amount.
- Compare with 4473. If the certificate shows 4473, it should match 3825 unless part of the contribution falls under 4586.
- Ask your employer for a corrected IRP5 if a figure is wrong. The certificate belongs to the employer's reconciliation, so the correction has to come from payroll. Changing a certificate amount yourself leaves your return out of line with what SARS holds from your employer.
- File, or correct after assessment. If you have already been assessed, follow our guide to a SARS request for correction (RFC) or, where SARS will not reassess, a notice of objection.
What if SARS issued an auto-assessment with the wrong 3825?
An auto-assessment uses the employer certificate as submitted. Once your employer has corrected the IRP5, you edit and file the return on eFiling. Our guide to disputing a SARS auto-assessment covers the steps.
What are the common mistakes with code 3825?
Most problems with 3825 come from reading it as cash, or from entering contributions twice.
Treating 3825 as extra salary
The amount is not money you received. It is in income because the law treats the employer contribution as yours, and the same amount comes back to you as a deemed contribution under 4003.
Entering the provident contribution again
The 4003 total on the IRP5 already includes the employer contribution and your own salary deductions. Adding your fund's annual statement figure again in another section of the return double counts it.
Ignoring 3825 when planning an RA top-up
Because the section 11F limit is shared, a top-up that ignores the employer's 3825 contribution can push you over the cap. The excess is carried forward, but it does not reduce this year's tax.
Accepting a certificate with 4473 and no 3825
The validation rules require 3825 and 4003 whenever 4473 is completed. A certificate with 4473 alone is a payroll error your employer has to fix.
Mixing up two-pot withdrawals with 3825
A savings pot withdrawal is a lump sum taxed under its own rules and reported under its own codes. It has nothing to do with 3825. If a two-pot withdrawal left you with tax to pay, read why a two-pot withdrawal can leave tax owing on assessment.
