How SARS taxes crypto

When is crypto taxable in South Africa?

SARS treats crypto assets as assets, not currency. A taxable event happens whenever you dispose of crypto or receive it as income, for example when you:

  • ✓Sell crypto for rand or another currency
  • ✓Trade one crypto asset for another
  • ✓Pay for goods or services with crypto
  • ✓Earn staking, lending or mining rewards

Whether a gain is taxed as income or as a capital gain depends on your intention and circumstances, which is why accurate records matter.

How it works

From exchange exports to a filed return

SARS receives information from crypto platforms, and the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) widens that reporting. Your return needs to match your real transaction history.

  4. 4

    We file with SARS

We add your crypto to your personal tax return and submit it to SARS.

Questions

Crypto tax questions, answered

Do South Africans pay tax on crypto?

Yes. South African tax residents are taxed on their worldwide income, and SARS treats gains and income from crypto assets as taxable. You declare crypto disposals and crypto income on your annual tax return, either as capital gains or as income depending on your intention and circumstances.

Is trading one crypto for another taxable?

Yes. A crypto-to-crypto trade is a disposal of the asset you give up, even if you never convert to rand. The gain or loss is the difference between the value of what you received and the base cost of what you gave up.

How does SARS know about my crypto?

SARS receives information from crypto platforms and financial institutions, and the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) extends that reporting to crypto service providers. It is safer to declare correctly before SARS asks.

What if some of my exchange data is missing?

It is common. Our Standard and Premium packages include missing data analysis, where we trace and fill gaps such as transfers between wallets or closed exchange accounts before calculating your tax.

How much does a crypto tax report cost?

Our annual crypto tax reports, which pair with your ITR12, are priced by transaction volume: Basic is R4 495 for up to 500 transactions, Standard is R9 995 for up to 3 000, and Premium is R18 995 for up to 5 000, all per tax year and excluding VAT. Provisional crypto tax reports, which pair with each IRP6, are half the price: R2 245, R4 995 and R9 495 per IRP6 period, for up to 250, 1 500 and 2 500 transactions.
