Bitcoin is the crypto asset most South Africans hold first, and it is usually the one that produces the largest figure on their tax return. SARS does not have a separate bitcoin tax. It applies the normal rules of the Income Tax Act to every BTC disposal, every BTC reward and every BTC salary payment. This guide explains which BTC events are taxable, how the rand value is set, which cost method applies, how the income or capital question is decided, and where each figure goes on your ITR12.
This guide is written for South African tax residents. If you live outside South Africa, our sister firm CountDeFi prepares crypto tax reports for other countries.
Is bitcoin taxed in South Africa?
Yes. The SARS Crypto Assets and Tax page states that normal income tax rules apply to crypto assets and that taxpayers must declare crypto gains or losses as part of their taxable income. The onus is on you to declare BTC income in the tax year in which it is received or accrued, and SARS says failure to do so results in interest and penalties.
Is bitcoin a currency for tax purposes?
No. The SARS Comprehensive Guide to Capital Gains Tax (Issue 9) records that cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are not official South African tender and are not regarded by SARS as a currency for the purposes of the Act. The guide also notes that the definition of "financial instrument" in section 1(1) of the Income Tax Act includes cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin.
Can BTC be a personal-use asset that escapes CGT?
No. Personal-use assets are excluded from capital gains tax, but a financial instrument is excluded from that category. The CGT guide states that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can never constitute a personal-use asset, so every BTC disposal is counted.
When is a bitcoin transaction taxable?
A BTC transaction is taxable when you dispose of the coins or when you receive them as income. Paragraph 11(1)(a) of the Eighth Schedule treats a sale, an exchange or any other transfer of ownership as a disposal, and the CGT guide confirms that the exchange of an asset is a disposal. Buying BTC with rand is an acquisition, not a disposal, so it creates a base cost and no tax.
- Buy BTC with rand: Taxable?: No; What SARS taxes: Nothing yet; the cost is your base cost
- Sell BTC for rand: Taxable?: Yes; What SARS taxes: Proceeds less base cost
- Swap BTC for another coin: Taxable?: Yes; What SARS taxes: Rand value of the coin received less base cost
- Pay for goods with BTC: Taxable?: Yes; What SARS taxes: A barter: a disposal at rand value
- Move BTC between your own wallets: Taxable?: No; What SARS taxes: No change of ownership
- Mine BTC: Taxable?: Yes; What SARS taxes: Normal tax on the value received
- Earn BTC as salary: Taxable?: Yes; What SARS taxes: Remuneration subject to employees' tax
Is swapping BTC for an altcoin or a stablecoin a disposal?
Yes. A swap of BTC for ETH, USDT or any other crypto asset is an exchange, and an exchange is a disposal under paragraph 11(1)(a). The proceeds are the rand market value of what you received. No rand needs to reach your bank account for the swap to count.
Is paying for something with BTC taxable?
Yes. The SARS crypto page describes goods or services exchanged for crypto assets as a barter transaction to which the normal barter rules apply. Spending BTC is therefore a disposal of the BTC at its rand value on the day.
Is moving BTC from Luno or VALR to my own wallet taxable?
No. A disposal requires a transfer of ownership. When you move BTC from an exchange account to a hardware wallet you own, you own the same coins before and after, so nothing is disposed of. Keep the withdrawal record, because it is the link between the purchase on the exchange and the later sale from the wallet.
How do I value bitcoin in rand for SARS?
Every BTC event is measured in rand at the time it happens. The SARS crypto asset FAQs state that the purchase price is determined on the date of the earlier of receipt and accrual, and that SARS does not use an average for the year because crypto assets are not shares.
Which price do I use when I swap BTC for another coin?
Use the rand market value of the asset received at the time of the swap. A rand order book on a South African exchange gives that figure directly. Where the trade happened on an offshore platform in US dollars or USDT, convert at the rate on the day and record the source of the rate, so that SARS can follow it during a verification.
What proof of cost does SARS accept?
The SARS FAQs state that conventional receipts or invoices suffice. For BTC that means the exchange's trade history and statements showing the date, the units, the rand amount and the fees for each purchase.
Which cost method applies when I bought BTC at different prices?
Paragraph 32 of the Eighth Schedule sets the rules for identical assets, and BTC units are identical assets. The CGT guide lists three permitted methods: specific identification, first-in-first-out (FIFO) and weighted average. The weighted-average method is limited to the classes of asset in paragraph 32(3A): listed financial instruments, participatory interests in collective investment schemes, gold and platinum coins and listed section 24J instruments. Bitcoin is not one of those classes, so a capital disposal of BTC uses specific identification or FIFO.
How does FIFO work for bitcoin?
Under FIFO the oldest BTC you hold is treated as sold first. If you bought 0.5 BTC in 2021 and 0.5 BTC in 2024 and then sell 0.5 BTC, the 2021 cost is set against the proceeds.
Can I use one method on one exchange and another elsewhere?
Choose a method and apply it consistently across your BTC holding. Your BTC on Luno, VALR and a hardware wallet is one holding of identical assets, so the base cost of a sale on one platform can come from a purchase on another. Records that tie each transfer between platforms together make the calculation possible.
Is my bitcoin gain income or a capital gain?
It depends on your own facts, and SARS tests it under the existing case law. The SARS crypto page says income from crypto transactions can be taxed on revenue account under "gross income", or the gains can be capital in nature under the Eighth Schedule, and that the distinction is tested under existing jurisprudence. The SARS Budget 2026 FAQs name the factors SARS weighs: frequency, intent and business-like conduct.
Which facts decide the character of a BTC gain?
The tests look at why you acquired the BTC, how long you held it, how often you bought and sold, whether you traded in a business-like manner, and how you funded the purchases. No single test decides the question. The character of each gain is decided on the taxpayer's own facts, and a taxpayer can hold some BTC on capital account and trade other BTC on revenue account at the same time.
How is each type of gain taxed?
The Budget 2026 FAQs state that frequent or business-like trading gains are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, and that gains on crypto held as a long-term investment are subject to capital gains tax at a maximum effective rate of 18% for individuals. The CGT guide sets the inclusion rate for individuals at 40%, so 40% of your net capital gain is added to taxable income.
What is the annual exclusion for 2026/27?
The Budget 2026 FAQs list the annual exclusion at R50,000 of gain or loss, up from R40,000, among the updated exclusions from 2 March 2026. It applies to your net capital gain or loss for the year across all capital assets, not to BTC alone. It does not apply to gains taxed on revenue account.
How is BTC from mining, rewards or salary taxed?
BTC you receive for work or activity is income when you receive it. The SARS FAQs state that income from mining crypto assets as a trade is subject to normal tax, that crypto received as payment for goods or services is included in gross income, and that crypto paid by an employer as remuneration is subject to employees' tax.
Do I need to register for provisional tax if I mine BTC?
The SARS FAQs state that a person who mines crypto assets, or who receives crypto as an independent contractor, is liable to register as a provisional taxpayer when total taxable income exceeds the tax threshold. Our guide on who should register for provisional tax explains the registration.
What is the base cost of BTC I received as income?
The rand value you included in income becomes the cost of those coins. When you later sell or swap the mined or earned BTC, that value is set against the proceeds, so the same rand is not taxed twice.
Can I deduct expenses against BTC trading or mining income?
Yes, where the expenses meet the requirements of the Income Tax Act. The SARS FAQs state that expenses incurred on crypto asset trading are deductible on that condition, and SARS's crypto page ties the deduction to expenditure incurred in the production of income and for purposes of trade.
How do I declare bitcoin on my ITR12?
You declare BTC in the section that matches its character, and you list the BTC you still hold in the statement of assets. The SARS Comprehensive Guide to the ITR12 (IT-AE-36-G05, revision 40) sets out each container. Our step-by-step guide on how to declare crypto on your ITR12 shows the screens in detail.
Which wizard questions switch on the BTC sections?
On the ITR12 wizard, answer "Y" to "Did you dispose of any local capital assets attracting capital gain or loss (including crypto assets)?" or the matching question for foreign capital assets. For trading, the Local Business, Trade and Professional Income section is labelled as including crypto asset(s).
Which source codes carry a BTC gain or loss?
A capital gain goes under Local Capital Gain/Loss with source code 4250 and a capital loss with 4251, as the ITR12 guide sets out. You declare each disposal separately, and the return makes provision for 10 local and 10 foreign disposals. The Budget 2026 FAQs give source code 4522 for income from crypto trading.
What are the practical steps to file BTC with SARS?
- Download your full history. Export the trade history and statements from Luno, VALR, any offshore exchange and every wallet, from your first BTC purchase to the end of the tax year.
- Match your transfers. Link each withdrawal to the deposit on the other side so that moves between your own wallets are not counted as disposals.
- Value each event in rand. Record the rand value of every sale, swap, spend, mining reward and salary payment on its date, with the source of the price.
- Apply your cost method. Work out the base cost of each disposal by specific identification or FIFO, using the same method throughout.
- Separate capital and revenue. Apply the tests to your own facts and split the year's results accordingly. Our guide to calculating crypto capital gains tax walks through the arithmetic.
- Complete the ITR12. On eFiling, answer the wizard questions, enter each disposal under Local Capital Gain/Loss (4250 or 4251) or trading income under Local Business, Trade and Professional Income, and list remaining BTC under "Financial instruments - crypto asset(s)" in the statement of assets.
- Keep the file. Store the exports, the calculation and the price sources for a verification or audit request.
What are the common mistakes with bitcoin tax?
Treating a BTC to USDT swap as not taxable
A swap into a stablecoin is a disposal of the BTC. Many taxpayers only count sales into rand and leave out the swaps, which understates the year's gains.
Using a yearly average price
The SARS FAQs state that SARS does not use the average for the year. Each event is valued on its own date.
Counting a wallet transfer as a sale
Moving BTC to your own hardware wallet is not a disposal. Treating the withdrawal as a sale creates a gain that does not exist and leaves the later real sale without a base cost.
Leaving out losses
The Budget 2026 FAQs state that all transactions, gains and losses, must be reported. Our guide on crypto losses on your tax return explains how they are used.
Waiting for SARS to find the gain
Crypto platforms now collect tax residency data under the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework. The Budget 2026 FAQs state that CARF took effect in South Africa on 2 March 2026 and that CARF is a reporting framework that does not change how crypto assets are taxed. Our guide on Luno reporting to SARS covers what the exchange sends.
What if I did not declare bitcoin in earlier years?
Correct it before SARS contacts you. The Budget 2026 FAQs state that the Voluntary Disclosure Programme allows taxpayers with previously undeclared income, including crypto, to regularise their affairs, that an application must be made before SARS starts an audit, inquiry or investigation, and that it gives 100% relief from understatement penalties where there was no intention to evade, with interest still payable. Our guide to the SARS VDP for undeclared crypto sets out the steps, and our guide to the SARS understatement penalty explains what applies without it.
