An AA88 SARS salary deduction means SARS has appointed your employer under section 179 of the Tax Administration Act to pay part of your salary to SARS towards unpaid personal income tax penalties or assessed debt. File outstanding returns, then settle or arrange payment; deductions stop when the debt is paid or SARS issues a cancellation or withdrawal.
On 27 October 2026, four days after the 23 October 2026 filing deadline for non-provisional individuals, SARS announced a revised schedule for automatic AA88 appointments. SARS does not link the change to the deadline, but late filers are now reading about penalties and employer collection together, while SARS's process guidance is written for payroll rather than for you.

What is an AA88 SARS salary deduction on my payslip?
An AA88 on your payslip is money your employer pays straight to SARS because SARS issued it a third-party appointment notice for your outstanding tax debt. Section 179(1) lets a senior SARS official authorise that notice to anyone who holds or owes you money, including salary. SARS's employer guide says the notice shows your name, tax and ID numbers, AA88 transaction number, monthly deduction, total amount, start and end dates, and a 19-digit PRN.
Is the AA88 amount my full SARS balance?
No. The guide states that the amount on the notice "does not represent the total employee's or taxpayer's outstanding account balance". Your Statement of Account (ITSA) on eFiling shows the balance, penalties, interest and history.
What is the difference between AA88 and ITA88?
Both are section 179 third-party appointments, and SARS's FAQ describes the ITA88 under section 179(1). ITA88 records are the legacy version. Their PRN cannot update electronically, so payroll handles them through a manual spreadsheet process.
Why did SARS issue an AA88 against my salary?
SARS issues an AA88 when you have an overdue administrative penalty or assessed tax balance, no dispute is in progress, a final demand went unanswered and SARS has identified a valid third party such as your employer. A dispute that was finalised, disallowed or partially allowed does not block the notice.
Late filing feeds this process. Section 210 requires SARS to impose the section 211 fixed penalty, and SARS's 22 October 2026 media release warned of monthly penalties of R250 to R16 000. SARS's penalty page says they recur for up to 35 months, while Tax Practitioner Connect Issue 74 says up to 47 months where the address is outdated. Our section 211 guide sets out the table.
I missed 23 October 2026. Will SARS take money from my salary straight away?
No. The chain runs from penalty, to unpaid balance, to final demand, to the 10-business-day wait, to a generation date. SARS has not published a start date for penalties on 2026 returns, so file now, because each further month can add another penalty. Our guide to missing the tax deadline covers the filing side.
Can SARS take the money without telling me?
Section 179(5) requires a final demand at least 10 business days before the notice, setting out recovery steps and debt relief. Section 179(6) lets SARS skip the demand if a senior official is satisfied it would prejudice collection. Centatax notes that employers do not receive proof of the demand, and an old email address on eFiling can mean you never see it.
When does SARS issue an AA88 under the revised 2026 schedule?
Under Revision 5 of SARS's employer guide, effective 27 October 2026, assessed tax AA88s are generated monthly on the 28th, 29th and 30th, and administrative penalty AA88s on those dates in January, March, May, July, September and November.
February runs on the 26th, 27th and 28th, and employers synchronise e@syFile Employer from the 1st of the following month. SARS's notice says the schedule gives employers more time to load deductions before payroll closes, and it expects fewer repeat appointments and cancellations.
Why does a SARS page still say the seventh of the month?
SARS's AA88 page, last updated 28 October 2026, still says "The newest AA88s are issued by the seventh of each month", and SARS has not reconciled this with the guide. Work from the guide's table, and ask payroll which AA88 month and transaction number your deduction relates to.
When is the next AA88 penalty run?
Applying the Revision 5 table, the next penalty run falls on 28 to 30 November 2026, with employers synchronising from 1 December. That date applies the general table to November, because SARS has not named a first cycle under the revised schedule. Treat each month-end as a possible AA88 run until your returns are filed and the debt is dealt with.
How do I stop an AA88 SARS salary deduction?
An AA88 salary deduction stops when the debt is settled, or when SARS issues a withdrawal or cancellation confirming the debt is paid or suitable arrangements are in place. Each available action does a different job, as the table shows. The collection bars in it come from section 215(3) and section 164(6), explained further down.
- File outstanding returns: Effect on the AA88: Stops new penalties only; What must follow: Pay or arrange the debt
- Pay the debt in full: Effect on the AA88: Deductions stop on settlement; What must follow: Proof to payroll, confirm allocation
- Payment arrangement: Effect on the AA88: Stops once SARS confirms; What must follow: All returns filed, entire debt covered
- Request Affordability: Effect on the AA88: SARS calculates terms; What must follow: Branch visit if too onerous
- RFR01 by the payment date: Effect on the AA88: Section 215(3) collection bar; What must follow: Keep proof, await the decision
- DISP01 suspension request: Effect on the AA88: Section 164(6) recovery bar; What must follow: Await the decision
- Employer submits Not employed: Effect on the AA88: Debt remains unpaid; What must follow: New third party possible
Does filing my return stop the AA88?
Filing stops new monthly penalties but does not clear the debt, and SARS's AA88 material does not say that filing alone cancels an existing appointment. File first, then pay or arrange, and expect the deduction to run until SARS's cancellation appears.
Will a payment arrangement stop the AA88?
It stops the deduction once SARS issues a withdrawal or cancellation confirming suitable arrangements. SARS requires all returns to be submitted and the arrangement to cover the entire debt. SARS may decline, and default ends the arrangement with normal collection resuming. The eFiling guide allows one tax type per request, simulates a plan defaulting to 6 months, takes proposals of 1 to 36 months and allows no cancellation once submitted.
How long does SARS take to cancel after I pay?
SARS has not published a timeframe for cancelling an AA88 after settlement or an arrangement. Give payroll your proof of payment and confirm allocation with SARS, and expect a possible overlap: Accounting Weekly's troubleshooting guide tells employers to "Continue deducting until the AA88 is cancelled". SARS's AA88 page says overpayments are refunded to the employee if no other SARS requirements are outstanding. Our refund delay article covers the follow-up.
Can my employer or HR cancel an AA88?
Your employer can cancel an AA88 transaction only through set outcomes such as Not employed, Deceased or an affordability request, and it has no outcome for "I've paid", so a cancellation based on your debt being dealt with has to come from SARS.
That is the qualifier behind "only SARS can cancel". SARS's AA88 page says "Only SARS can issue a cancellation in the relevant format to the third party", and a SARS assessed tax notice quoted on a Sage forum says "Only SARS may withdraw this notice". The guide lists payroll's outcomes as Not employed, Request Affordability, Deceased and Insolvent. SARS can also cancel for "Taxpayer disputes" or "New 3rd Party identified".
Can HR refuse to deduct the AA88?
HR cannot ignore the notice. A recipient unable to comply must give reasons within the period in the notice under section 179(2), and section 179(3) makes a recipient that parts with the money contrary to the notice personally liable for it. SARS's AA88 page adds a possible fine or up to two years' imprisonment for a third party that fails to act.
What does a valid AA88 cancellation look like?
It is a SARS-issued cancellation or withdrawal that payroll can validate. SARS tells employers to validate finalised or cancelled AA88s before suspending deductions, to reduce the risk of fraudulent documents, so a letter you hand over yourself is not enough.
What can I do if the AA88 deduction is more than I can afford?
If an AA88 deduction leaves you short, ask payroll to submit Request Affordability, apply in writing under section 179(4) for an extended payment period to cover basic living expenses, and visit a SARS branch if the terms remain too onerous.
How does Request Affordability work?
The guide says SARS uses your IRP5/IT3(a) information to calculate terms, with updates that "should be available within 24-48 hours". The older G03 guide (Revision 3) bars employers from requesting affordability where an assessed tax AA88 is active. Revision 5 of G01 has no such bar, and SARS has not said G03 is withdrawn. Have payroll try the outcome if the record allows it, and book a branch visit at the same time with G03's pack: outstanding returns, your last three months' payslips and proof of expenses.
How much of my salary can SARS take?
SARS's AA88 material contains no formula or percentage cap on salary; section 179(4) and (5) refer to basic living expenses instead. Bring payslips and proof of expenses, and make the request under section 179(4) expressly.
What about the five days after a final demand?
Section 179(5) lets a natural person apply within five business days of receiving the demand for a reduction based on basic living expenses. SARS has not published a dedicated form or channel, so treat the demand date as the deadline, apply in writing through a recorded channel and keep proof.
Can I dispute the penalty or assessment behind an AA88?
You can dispute the debt behind an AA88, using RFR01 for an administrative penalty and DISP01 for an objection, appeal or suspension request, but section 164(1) says an objection or appeal does not suspend the obligation to pay unless a senior SARS official directs otherwise.
Will an RFR01 remission request stop the AA88?
Section 215(1) requires the request on or before the payment date in the penalty assessment. Section 215(3) then bars collection steps on the penalty from receipt until 21 business days after notice of the decision, unless SARS reasonably believes there is a risk of asset dissipation or fraud. SARS's remission page does not mention this bar and says an agent may be appointed for unpaid amounts, so keep your submission proof and cite section 215(3) if an AA88 follows. Remission requires a first incidence or non-compliance under five business days, plus reasonable grounds and the non-compliance being remedied.
Will an objection or suspension request stop the deduction?
An objection alone does not. SARS's dispute guide allows 80 business days from the assessment date, and an objection on a penalty can follow only a disallowed or partially allowed RFR; see our objection guide. A section 164(2) suspension request on DISP01 addresses collection directly: section 164(6) bars recovery from the day SARS receives it until 10 business days after notice of its decision, unless SARS reasonably believes assets may be dissipated. Section 95 estimated assessments cannot be disputed, but suspension can be requested within 40 business days.
What if I never received the final demand?
Look for the demand under SARS Correspondence on eFiling, raise the point with SARS and take legal advice before relying on it, because the judgments turned on their facts. In SIP Project Managers (11521/2020), SARS did not prove delivery, so the notice was declared null and void. Pather (52782/21) accepted substantial compliance with section 179(5), and CRRC E-Loco, as summarised by Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, upheld SARS's use of section 179(6). Your employer must keep deducting in the meantime.
What steps should I take, in order, to deal with an AA88?
Start by getting the AA88 notice details from payroll, then check eFiling, file outstanding returns, deal with the debt and leave the deduction running until SARS's cancellation reaches your employer.
- Get the notice details. Ask payroll for the AA88 month, transaction number, PRN, monthly deduction and total amount.
- Check eFiling. Open your Statement of Account (ITSA) and SARS Correspondence, correct old contact details, and use the AP34 and a requested APSA statement for penalty detail.
- File outstanding ITR12s. Our document checklist helps here. The ITR12 guide says eFiling and the MobiApp handle returns up to five years old, with exceptions including returns where an administrative penalty was levied.
- Dispute if you have grounds. Submit RFR01 on or before the payment date, or DISP01 for suspension, and keep the proof.
- Pay or arrange. Pay in full, or submit a payment arrangement on eFiling that covers the entire debt.
- Raise affordability. Ask payroll for Request Affordability, and make your section 179(4) request in writing.
- Update payroll. Hand over proof of payment or the arrangement, and keep deductions running until SARS's cancellation appears.
- Reconcile. Check allocation on your ITSA. For an overpayment, clear outstanding returns and contact SARS quoting the AA88 transaction number and PAYE number; SARS publishes no refund period or claim procedure.
What are the most common AA88 mistakes?
The most common AA88 mistake is assuming that filing a return, telling HR or changing jobs ends the deduction, when each of those leaves the underlying debt with SARS.
Asking HR to switch it off
Payroll exposes itself to personal liability if it stops without SARS's cancellation. Bring proof to payroll, but direct the request to SARS.
Treating a job change as the end of it
Not employed cancels active appointments on the employer's side without settling anything. Because SARS has a "New 3rd Party identified" cancellation reason, the appointment can move to another payer.
Treating the deduction as PAYE
SARS's AA88 guides give no IRP5 source code for AA88 deductions. Do not count one as a PAYE credit; check its allocation on the Statement of Account.
Letting an arrangement default
Default ends the arrangement and collection resumes, and a previously defaulted arrangement fails eFiling validation on a later request. Set the instalment at a level your payslip supports before you submit, because a submitted request cannot be cancelled.
What does SARS already hold, and how does an AA88 mismatch show up?
SARS already holds your employer's IRP5/IT3(a) data, certificates from other third parties and each AA88 outcome your employer submits, so a mismatch shows up on your Statement of Account or in the affordability terms SARS calculates.
Employers report through the EMP501, and the interim period of 1 March to 31 August 2026 was due between 21 September and 31 October 2026. A stale or wrong certificate can distort your affordability terms. Third parties also submit certificates such as the IT3(b). Auto-assessments draw on this data, and debts of R100 or more must be paid by the due date, so query a wrong auto-assessment before it becomes a collection item.
Why are my AA88 payments not on my ITSA?
Accounting Weekly lists sync delays, wrong references and processing delays as causes. Ask payroll for the proof of payment and reference used, then take them to SARS with your AA88 transaction number.
Why did the AA88 go to an old employer?
HRTorQue says notices typically rely on the latest IRP5, which is not tied to current payroll. If you have left or died and money was wrongly paid, the employer must ask SARS in writing for rectification.
